MVU Middle School Students Take 1st Place
at the 2nd Annual Tech and Engineering Day

On Wednesday April 13th, 7th and 8th grade middle school students from MVU attended the 2nd annual Tech and Engineering Day at the Northwest Technical Center. During the day the students competed in various challenges related to technology and engineering. The 7th and 8th graders also heard from students enrolled in the program at the Tech Center talk about different classes that were available to them such as Engineering Technologies, Digital Arts and many more. Three of the MVU Students that won awards in the State Science fair also spoke with the  students. Mikaela Magnet, Olivia McGovern and Karissa McFadden shared with the students about the science projects they researched for the science fair and about some of the prizes they won. They also spoke about the Science offerings at MVU such as taking AP Biology as well as other classes.
The 50 Middle School students who attended the Tech and Engineering day ended up taking first place in a competition with St. Albans Town School and St. Albans City School. They  competed in 10 different competitions dealing with engineering and design. Each group competed in two different competitions during the day including two that the students had to create ahead of time. In one of those competitions, May Gratton and Grace Kinney created a research project on Engineering careers and they took first place in that project. In another the students had to create an edible car that they raced down a ramp. Owen Greenwood, Emily Graham and Cameron Turcotte took 1st place is this contest. MVU Students also took 2nd and 3rd place in that event. In other events one group of students took 1st place in both events they competed in! That group consisted of Maddie Giroux, Kassie Wilkins, Jordan Bushey and Paige Johnson. They took first place in Material Design where they had to create a material that would hold the most weight using plastic, string, tape and hot glue (it held over 50 pounds). Their other top finish was in the toy design project where they created a motorized drawing toy. Other top finishes by MVU students were in Material Engineering where the group of Ayden Larose, Noah Morris and Jack Evans took first.  Also in Electrical Circuits where the group of Bailey Beauregard, Catherine Paradis and Brooke Lamothe created a LED flashlight and used it to send a word to to the rest of the group using a code they created.
MVU students worked very hard and showed their problem solving skills by not only taking the 1st places in the above competitions but also sweeping 1st, 2nd and 3rd in half the events of the day. Overall it was a very successful day as the students learned teamwork and problem solving skills and learned more about what it means to be an engineer.
